One of the World War II themed was Infinity Ward's first sequel (and the first game in the series on Xbox 360). It may look a little outdated now, but it was in it that the foundation of the mechanics we are familiar with was laid. The game featured three intense campaigns (the story of Soviet soldiers especially stood out), where the action did not slow down even for a second. The multiplayer was also memorable, especially the Search and Destroy mode.

It is worth noting the outstanding graphics for those times, as well as the high frame rate (which was rare for games on the Xbox 360). The second part is noticeably inferior to those presented below, but this does not mean that it does not deserve attention. In addition, the game even runs on the Xbox One console, so all history buffs will be able to immerse themselves in the events of half a century ago.

The latest shooter from Treyarch on the same theme of World War II was remembered by everyone not so much for the story campaign as for the Nazi zombies. This was originally intended as a fun Easter egg, but eventually grew into one of the most recognizable COD modes. Tense defense against endless waves of zombies in cramped quarters fits perfectly with the pace set by the game. But this is not to say that the main campaign and multiplayer were unsuccessful.

The setting of World At War looked fresh, especially after Modern Warfare, where the events took place in our time. The multiplayer turned out to be quite high-quality, although it was lost among the rest of the series. It featured the first appearance of a canine companion, to which the series returned more than once.

This was a mini-reboot of the series after the frankly weak Ghosts. Advanced Warfare featured a near-future setting and character double jumps for the first time. Sledgehammer's debut, while drawing on the charisma of Kevin Spacey, retains the high-level, adrenaline-pumping action that has long been the brand's hallmark.

To suit the action, futuristic gadgets were also introduced, including an automatic grappling hook. And the variety of weapons in multiplayer forced many to spend several weeks in it, pumping up the machines they liked. A great debut from Sledgehammer, setting the stage for her future projects.

Treyarch's Black Ops trilogy is the strangest entry in the series, but that's what makes it interesting. In the second part of this trilogy, we saw how COD experimented with a system of multiple endings for the first (and so far last) time. For many, this was the reason to play through the game several more times to unlock all the available endings. But much more important were the innovations in multiplayer, where the Pick 10 system appeared, which provided greater opportunities for customizing the hero’s weapons and skills. And even if not every of the proposed innovations has taken root in the series, this game is still worth getting acquainted with: experimental solutions here coexist with time-tested mechanics.

The concept of COD in the distant future initially seemed pretentious, but Black Ops 3 turned out surprisingly great. The story here is not much like a second-rate action movie, but the ability to play with four players more than makes up for all the shortcomings of the plot, adding an element of strategy to the game, which is extremely unusual for the series (in addition, several endings have appeared here again).

Multiplayer was performed at the level of eSports disciplines: from the “Specialists” mode, created in the spirit of MOBA games, to dynamic team shootings. And the new movement mechanics brought the necessary variety to the gameplay. Gamers could easily combine running along walls and killing enemies, and this combination looked quite natural.

Ignore the criticism, because Infinity Ward's latest game, Infinite Warfare, offers one of the best story campaigns yet. The intergalactic setting allowed us to add battles in spacesuits to the game, as well as shootouts in zero gravity, where we can hide behind asteroids using a grappling hook. Each episode is filled with spectacular events, which marked a return to Infinity Ward's roots.

And in multiplayer, the developers decided to mix crowd-approved elements instead of reinventing something. For example, the “Combat Rig” mode is a kind of reworking of “Specialists” from get Black Ops 3. Even the “Zombies on a Space Station” mode can delight any fan of the series. However, the same can be said about the entire game as a whole.

Saying that this is the weakest entry in the Modern Warfare trilogy is like calling Return of the Jedi the worst film in the first Star Wars trilogy. At least there are no Ewoks here. The game, with its characteristic scope, brings the story to the end, accompanied by inventive missions. Just look at “Return to Sender”, where we find ourselves in the very center of a sandstorm with all the ensuing consequences.

Yes, the multiplayer here actively uses the developments of previous parts, essentially offering nothing new, but replacing a streak of kills with a streak of points brings the necessary balance to the game. In addition, there are plenty of beautifully modeled maps here. All this together makes for a fascinating game that does not lose its charm even today.

The Vietnamese chapter of COD from Treyarch studio is deservedly considered the best project from this developer in the entire series. The storyline is full of unforgettable moments, and the multiplayer modes use some pretty creative ideas. For example, the “Game with Guns” mode, where the character changes weapons after each kill, pleases with the variety of the arsenal, despite the fact that it takes place in the 60s. The Cold War setting fits perfectly into the concept of the game - in scenes that are quite shocking from a moral point of view, well-chosen music is used, such as compositions by The Rolling Stones, which gives the shooter a unique charm. By the way, I still don’t understand what these numbers mean.

Modern Warfare 2 had to meet all the expectations of gamers after the revolutionary first part, and it coped with this task with dignity. The single-player campaign demonstrated a spectacle of unprecedented proportions, while maintaining the usual high pace, and the multiplayer featured the smallest map in the series, Rust, which quickly won the love of the audience.

Of course, if you wanted, you could find a couple of disadvantages here, like calling a nuclear strike in online modes and the mission “Not a Word in Russian” in the main storyline, which is why the game did not make it to the first place on this list. But it's hard to find fault with a game that consists almost entirely of scenes that are deservedly considered classics of the series - including an attack on the gulag to free an important prisoner.

Did you expect Black Ops: Declassified to come out on top? Come on. It's hard to argue that Modern Warfare is the pinnacle of the entire gaming series. It was popular at the time of its release, and is now considered a golden classic of shooters, which most modern projects are equal to. The main reason is the revolutionary gameplay in multiplayer, especially on consoles. A lot of skills and upgradeable weapons, perfect balance on each map and exciting gameplay even today attract new players.

Gorgeous missions (“Death from Above,” “All in Camouflage,” “Charlie Don’t Surf” are just a few) and unexpected plot twists combine to create the best military story told in Call of Duty. And the 2016 re-release made the game even better, bringing the graphics up to the level of Infinite Warfare. Things like experience gain, unlocking hidden options, friend lists, and other community features are present in the game to keep you hooked and create a sense of progress.

Alliance Valiant Arms (AVA) offers plenty of game modes that any first-person shooter fan will love: various cooperation options with other players available for all modes, capture the flag and multi-round missions.

PlanetSide 2

PlanetSide 2 is a clear winner in terms of its scope and depth; is an extremely fun and interesting MMOFPS. The game is set in the same universe as the first game, but you don't really need experience with the original to enjoy this game.

And yet, as someone who played the first game, I can tell you that they are very different from each other. The original PlanetSide was the kind of game where the storylines didn't flow together into an overall story, and there were too many issues with it that the game couldn't be given a high rating. In the sequel, everything is completely different, since its developers literally redid everything, starting from the first drawings and prevented the occurrence of defects at the initial stage.

PlanetSide 2 takes place in a futuristic war setting as three factions fight for control of various territories. This is an especially attractive option if you like to control land vehicles or aircraft, as PlanetSide 2 has a lot of them. Each of the many factions has their own strengths and weaknesses that do not add up to the overall strategy, and it is extremely important to consider when deciding which weapon to take into battle against a specific faction.

You'll have to adapt to the behavior of your chosen faction, and it's generally a good idea to test your strengths and weaknesses before jumping into battle. Depending on your playstyle, you'll definitely fit into one faction more than the other. Not only do you have a wide variety of weapons to choose from, but you also get the ability to customize your character's body, there are special incentive bonus settings, and much more. You can create different character options and freely switch between them depending on your momentary desire or the abilities that are necessary to play on a certain map or as part of a team.

I'm a big fan of non-military games like Call of Duty that aren't overly serious (like Team Fortress 2, which is also on this list), and if you're into those types of games, this is a great option.

Another one of the casual first-person shooters that I really like is Team Fortress 2. Similar to Gotham City Impostors, the game was originally released as a paid game and has exploded in popularity since it became free to play. It's a game that I keep coming back to, simply because it has a fun atmosphere, a close-knit community of players, and a level of variety that most other games simply can't match. There are no complicated storylines in the game: the Blue and Red teams confront each other in endless battles, which, as a rule, take place on maps drawn in accordance with the mission goal. The main element of the game is the nine classes established by the developers, each of which plays its own role on the battlefield. Character classes include heavy-duty strongmen who can withstand heavy loads, medics who can heal teammates, spies who can turn into enemies, and pyrotechnicians who like to play with fire. Maps offer plenty of choice; There are a huge number of different maps and game modes available, and if you are part of a large community, it is very easy to find a game that suits your requirements. All the standard maps, such as the capture the flag mission map, are also present in the game, but there are also more unique ones that represent something that you have never encountered before.

If when creating Black Ops the authors focused more on arcade shootouts on small maps, then Battlefield 3 offers much larger battles and, most importantly, demonstrates much more realistic physics.

The confrontation between the two series has already become a matter of principle, but in the last two games it has acquired shades of farce: the developers of Battlefield 4 say that they have a falling skyscraper, and the developers of Ghosts show off a multi-pixel dog. The arguments are ironclad, there is nothing to say, but after such statements the desire to download both games somehow disappears.

Even our developers produce games similar to Call of Duty. Thus, the famous online shooter Warface is in no way inferior to the latest CoD games in terms of graphics and at the same time offers online battles similar in style. Moreover, the audience for Warface even exceeds the audience for Ghosts, although much more effort and money was spent on the development of the latter.

If you prefer solo companies, then in this case games like Call of Duty, such as F.E.A.R, Rainbow Six, Brothers in Arms, and the same long-suffering one, which, although going through difficult times, are nevertheless suitable for you still showing signs of life.
